Become a High School Volleyball Official

Did you know that we assign matches for over 108 schools in the metro area?

To become a high school volleyball official and a member of the Whistle While You Work Metro Area Officials Association, you must:

  • Register with the Minnesota State High School League (registration fee applies). Fee includes rule and case books, insurance, and other publications. Registration for returning officials must be done by July 1st, otherwise a $20.00 late fee is charged. The registration deadline does not apply for new officials.
  • Annually attend one of the MSHSL-sponsored rule interpretation meetings, which are held prior to each sports season. New this year is the online meeting. More information can be found at the MSHSL Web site under Officials' Corner.
  • Score 80% or better on an open-book test in Volleyball.
  • Apply for a membership to Whistle While You Work Metro Area High School Volleyball Association (registration fee of $90.00/apply). Mail your checks to Sandy Doherty 1053 Dakota St. S, Shakopee, MN 55379. If you are new, contact Sandy at to start your Arbiter application.
    • At the end of the high school season, any official that does not receive at least 5 matches will get a $45.00 refund.
  • 1st through 3rd year officials MUST attend a rating tournament. This training tournament is also open to any officials who want to get rated. You will be reviewed by an observer both as a Referee and an Umpire. Please wear your uniform to the tournament. Information can be found at the MSHSL Web site under Officials' Corner. NOTE – the dates are wrong on the MSHSL Web site. It is August 8th and 9th.
  • Attend an Association meeting which will be held August 16th, Noon at the VFW (100 Shady Oak Road) in Hopkins. The VFW is having a food drive, so if you would like, please bring a non-perishable food item for the food shelf. This meeting is mandatory for all new to 3rd year officials.
